A new member from West Wickham, Kent

Good afternoon

I was recently given a card by a member of the network so decided to join and find out what it is all about.

Hi From outside London

My name is Steve, after chatting with Julia I decided to jump aboard even though I’m from outside London. Not by far though as I live in Benfleet.

My interest is mostly Sports and Wildlife of any sort.

I’m looking forward to attending some of the upcoming events when time permits. Hopefully starting with Bushy Park.

And here's another unknown fly

Another unknown fly, this one around 1.5cms in length and squabbling with the other unknown fly over the thistle flowers

It nests like most solitary bees or wasp in this case, at one stage I lost sight of it and then I noticed it crawling out of the top of a bamboo pole. I then found out that they live in small holes in wood or in places like bug hotels. Also I knew it was Mexican ( here comes a Peter joke) because it had a sombrero on its head. Sorry.

What is this Fly?

ree
Seen in numbers in Camberwell Old Cemetery - around 1cm in length, most of them returning again and again to the thistle flower

It did look a little bit strange, because it looks like it’s wearing one of those wrestling masks they sometimes use in south America Mexico for example 😂

Have I got this right?

I think this Bee, captured in flight at Eltham Palace gardens last week, is a Large Meadow Mining Bee (Adrena labialis), but I'm not 100% certain. Can anyone confirm, or correct my ID if I'm wrong?

Anyone remember what this Raptor at Willows Birds of Prey yesterday was called?

Preparing to Land

Did anyone else at the Willows Birds of Prey field trip yesterday clock the name of this raptor? We were told, and I think the word 'grey' may have appeared somewhere in the common name, but I can't recall the rest of the name.

My pleasure Barrie, because of the grey frontage of the feathers it was a little bit difficult to get a good result and with a lot of these birds a lot of them have a very similar colour frontage, however we got there in the end 😀.

But which one is this ?

Costa Rica has something approaching a thousand species of birds.

Can you help identify this one - spotted at La Selva Research Station ?

Anhinga with a catfish

Whilst not my best quality shot it may be of interest to some. Anhingas are in the darter family, Anhingidae. Like other darters, anhingas hunt by spearing fishes and other small prey with their sharp, slender beaks. Because anhingas' feathers have an unique shape, their feathers become waterlogged when submerged in water, making it difficult for them to stay afloat. However, their waterlogged feathers allow them to dive easily and search for underwater prey, such as fish and amphibians. Anhingas can stay underwater for substantial periods of time.
